What Is Mercury Retrograde?
When Mercury retrogrades, we are watching Hermes the Messenger get stuck, go backwards, disappear, and repeat himself.
Astrologers believe that during Mercury retrograde life is affected here on Earth, specifically within the realm of communication, and technology.
In astrology, Mercury governs communication, travel and learning. We tend to experience muddled, confusing communication during certain retrograde transits.
In 2020, Mercury retrograde will impact us three times:
- February 17 – March 10
- June 18 – July 12
- October 14 – November 3
The 2020 Presidential Election
The most consequential Mercury retrograde will be the final one, lasting from October 14 – November 3. It will be corresponding to the giant mess that will be the 2020 US Presidential Elections.
It will occur in the signs of Libra, associated with justice, and Scorpio, the murkiest and darkest of signs. Accordingly, we could see doubly murky political misunderstandings and breaches of the law and social norms.
It could lead to repetitions, like vote recounts, and most likely delays in understanding the voice of the people.
The Brexit vote occurred when Mercury was retrograde, and we are still trying to figure that one out. Expect something similar, if not worse, with the US Elections.
What Other Events Will Mercury Retrograde Impact?
The first retrograde from February 17 – March 10 will be mild. It features Mercury in Aquarius. This transit won’t be challenging, since Mercury in Aquarius is a friendly passing. Mercury will actually strengthen Aquarius, which rules groups, teams, clubs, societies, associations and networks. It will be a positive time for humanitarian, large-scale issues to be reworked and launched.
The second period of Mercury retrograde motion lasts from June 18 until July 12. Mercury will be retrograde in Leo, where it also has the Sun and North Node nearby. The North Node being present with the Sun will encourage us to focus more on our self identity and soul path. When Mercury retrogrades in Leo, however, your vitality may seem a little bit dimmed and your powers of persuasion may not be as potent.
