Lilith is a component of modern astrology that can refer to the “dark moon” or the asteroid named Lilith. In this article, we’ll look at where Lilith comes from, how Lilith is considered in astrology, and the influence of Lilith on your horoscope.
About the origins of Lilith
In modern times, Lilith is seen as a female goddess, and is associated with paganism and witchcraft, particularly Wicca, which is a formal religion developed in the mid-1950s.
The origin of Lilith goes back to Jewish mythology, where she is a figure found in the earliest Babylonian Talmud in the third century. Lilith is most often seen as a demon of the night, a dangerous female demon who is sexually wonton and steals babies in the darkness. Historically, Lilith is linked to one of the earliest classes of female demons in the ancient Mesopotamian religion. Lilith can be found in the cuneiform texts of Sumer, the Akkadian Empire, Syria and Babylonia.
Some myths say that Lilith was Adam’s first wife, although there is no biblical text to support this idea. In this mythology, Lilith existed before Eve and was equal to man. Lilith was uncontrolled and disobedient, impossible to tame. She was exiled, becoming bitter and turned into a witch-like creature.
How Lilith relates to astrology
Dark moon theory
In astrology, Lilith is given the position of a hypothetical second moon, also called “the dark moon.” Lilith is also thought of as an unseen or undiscovered planet. Astrologer Sepharial (real name Walter Gorn Old) proposed the idea of Lilith in 1918, and claimed it was the same second moon that scientist Georg Waltemath claimed to have discovered twenty years earlier.
In astrology today, Lilith often refers to the axis of the moon’s actual orbit or Apogee.
According to Wikipedia:
“When considered as a point, this Lilith is sometimes defined as the second focus of the ellipse described by the Moon’s orbit; the earth is the first focus, and the apogee lies in the same direction. It takes 8 years and 10 months to complete its circuit around the zodiac.”
Asteroid Lilith
Some astrologers also refer to the asteroid Lilith, technically named 1181 Lilith. This metallic asteroid was first discovered on 11 February 1927, and resides in the middle region of the asteroid belt, and is approximately 23 kilometers in diameter.
Astrologers consider this asteroid along with Ceres, Pallas, Vesta and Juneau. These asteroids are believed to give additional information that provides more exacting readings than the planets. The mythology behind these asteroids is key to providing a window into their influence.
Lilith’s influence in astrology
There is no doubt that Lilith is a dark point in any horoscope chart. However, it is important because it shows us our dark side and/or where darkness may be approaching us from – from without or from within. By understanding the influence of Lilith in our lives, we can understand when and how it may affect us, and where it may lead us.
Lilith represents feminine sexual nature. It is thought that the astrological Age of Pisces has repressed female sexuality, but it will become unloosed in the Age of Aquarius.
In considering Lilith in one’s horoscope chart, the astrologer will first note which sign of the zodiac Lilith appears in. Next, the astrologer will look at the house in which Lilith will manifest herself. Finally, the astrologer will consider the aspects and which planets are involved with Lilith.
