Venus in Astrology: Understanding the Planet of Love

Named for the tempestuous goddess of love from Roman mythology, the planet Venus rules two distinct parts of our lives. The first, of course, is love. But the second one might surprise you!

Getting to Know the Planet Venus

The only planet to be named after a female deity, Venus is covered in thick clouds that conceal her surface. We know that Venus has more active volcanoes than any other planet in our solar system, making her volatile and red-hot. Does that sound like any women you know?

Venus appears as the brightest planet in the sky. Her beauty leads her to be called the morning star or evening star. In short, she’s a knock-out. But she also spins backward compared to the other planets, making her contrary and difficult to follow.

How Venus Impacts Our Lives

Because she presides over both Taurus and Libra, many astrologers say that Venus rules love and money. It’s more accurate to say that she rules the things we value–whether that’s literal treasure, pleasure, beauty, or romance.

As one of the inner planets, Venus moves relatively swiftly through the zodiac. Typically, she spends 2-3 weeks in a sign before moving on. However, due to her eccentric orbit, she’s also prone to retrogrades. If Venus is in retrograde, she’ll stick around for months on end.

Venus vs. Mars

Venus loves us and wants us to be happy. Mars, on the other hand, is much more aggressive. You can think of Venus as representing your desires and Mars as the actions you’ll take to obtain those desires.

When the two planets–the cosmic lovers–are working in harmony, you can expect great things in your relationships.

The Lesser Benefic

You might have heard Venus referred to as the “lesser benefic.” This term refers to her influence as a positive, benevolent force in our lives. She loves us and wants us to be happy.

It’s not just about love and sex–although she’s a fan of both. Venus enjoys all the sensual pleasures of the world, from a beautiful garden in bloom to the perfect outfit that makes you feel fabulous.

Ultimately, Venus represents the divine feminine in all of us–both men and women. Despite her beauty and grace, she’s a powerful force to be reckoned with.
