Combining the Zodiac with Rituals and Astrological Magic

Many practitioners of New Age rituals, Magick, and Wicca time their practices around astrology for greater impact. This can be helpful with intentions, attractions and zodiac crystals. Zodiacal magic helps one contact and direct the energies of each zodiac sign.

The planetary and elemental qualities of the zodiac can bring potent forces.

Zodiac magic and the planets

In traditional astrology, one only considers the seven planets and heavenly bodies that are visible with the naked eye: the sun, the moon, Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter and Saturn.

In modern astrology, one considers Uranus, Neptune and Pluto, as well as, a few other heavenly bodies.

Astrological moon phase magic

One common practice is to invoke rituals or magic during a full moon and when it is in a particular zodiac sign. The moon affects natural rhythms on earth, affecting animals, humans and ocean tides.

Depending on what sign of the zodiac the moon is in, it will have more influence over certain qualities such as authority, love, healing, attitudes, power, strength, intellectual matters, self-control, emotions, secret knowledge, imagination, clairvoyance and much more.

Moon sign magic

Some practitioners also consider the “moon sign,” that is, what sign of the zodiac the moon is in. However, while this has benefit, it is less powerful than moon phase magic.

Planetary days

Another method is timing your rituals or magic based on planetary days. The seven days of the week correspond to the seven planets in traditional astrology (those that can be seen with the naked eye).

  • Sunday: The Sun
  • Monday: The Moon
  • Tuesday: Mars
  • Wednesday: Mercury
  • Thursday: Jupiter
  • Friday: Venus
  • Saturday: Saturn

Planetary hours

Still another factor is planetary hours. Each hour of the day is assigned to having rule by a particular planet. It is important to note that planetary hours are fluid and not set. They change each hour and each day of the week. As this is more complicated, one needs a planetary hour chart, which can easily be found online.

The witching hour

In a simpler manner, there is a general belief that the most powerful hour of the day for performing magic rituals is 3 AM. As such, this hour has been called: “The Witching Hour.”

Planetary retrogrades

Retrograde is when the positions of Earth and the Sun in relation to another planet, gives that planet the illusion of moving backward or retrograde.

There is really only one thing to know concerning retrograde: Magic focused on harnessing the power of a planet does not work well when that planet is in retrograde.

Planets in retrograde are limited events, and each year you can easily find dates online identifying which planets will be in retrograde and when.

Months of the year

As the sun moves into specific signs of the zodiac, this can be important for rituals or magic. The zodiac sign that the sun is in can create a more powerful result depending on what you are performing the ritual for.

The sun moves through each zodiac sign approximately every 30 days, usually entering a sign during the 20-23rd day of the month (although it could be 18-19 for some signs).

Solstice and equinoxes

Performing rituals during the summer or winter solstice, or during the spring or autumn equinox, has been practiced for centuries.

The summer solstice brings the longest day of the year, where the energies of light and the sun’s power are at their strongest.

Oppositely, the winter solstice brings the longest night of the year, where the energies of darkness are at their most powerful. Ancient beliefs were that this is when the veil between our world and the spiritual world was at its thinnest, making it the most accessible time for things to cross over.

At the autumn and spring equinox, it is a time of equal day and night.
