Understanding the Polarities in Astrology

Polarities in astrology define opposites and opposing traits such as masculine and feminine, active or passive, introverted or extroverted and more. In this article, we’ll delve into the characteristics affected by polarities and how they apply to the signs of the zodiac, as well as, how the polarities align one sign with another to arrive at its complementary sign.

How the polarities work

Polarities in the zodiac are signs that are natural opposites. To arrive at the polarities, the signs of the zodiac are divided into two groups of six signs. This division follows the natural order of the zodiac on the 360 degrees zodiac wheel. Therefore, for each sign, its polar opposite is the one found at 180 degrees in opposition.

Essentially, the polarity of a zodiac sign is mirrored by the sign on its polar opposite. These have Yin and Yang energies which are complementary toward one another. To have a reciprocal flow of energy, these polar opposite energies are both necessary to achieve balance.

Opposites attract

Under the idea that opposites attract, signs and the polarities are considered those that possess a natural affinity toward balancing one another out, thus, making them compatible.

In fact, the idea is that these oppositions pull the other out of their comfort zone, inspiring them to reach for new goals and encouraging them to grow.

The 6 zodiac sign polarities

  • Aries and Libra
  • Taurus and Scorpio
  • Gemini and Sagittarius
  • Cancer and Capricorn
  • Leo and Aquarius
  • Virgo and Pisces

The elements are always complementary in polarities

While the pairing of signs in polarities are polar opposites, when it comes to the elements in astrology (Fire, Air, Earth, Water) these are not opposites, but complementary, aligning masculine/masculine or feminine/feminine.

Masculine and Feminine alignment

Fire and Air signs are known as masculine and also equate to the Chinese Yang. Earth and Water signs are known as feminine and translate to the Chinese Yin.

When applied to polarities for example, Aries is a Fire sign (masculine) and its polarity, the Air sign Libra, is also masculine.

Likewise, the polarity of Taurus (earth/feminine) aligns with Scorpio (water/feminine).

The masculine signs of the zodiac are: Aries, Gemini, Leo, Lever, Sagittarius and Aquarius.

The feminine signs of the zodiac are: Taurus, cancer, Virgo, Scorpio, Capricorn and Pisces.

Active and passive polarities

Active and passive characteristics in polarities occur in zodiacal order. First you have: Aries (active), Taurus (passive), Gemini (active), Cancer (passive) and so on.

Active signs

Active signs are those that are more outgoing and extroverted, energetic, enthusiastic and tend to be physical people.

Active signs are also those that have “positive polarity” and are Yang signs.

These signs are: Aries, Gemini, Leo, Libra, Sagittarius and Aquarius.

These signs are either fire or air signs, and are masculine, active, extroverted, dominant and expressive.

Passive signs

Passive signs tend to be more internalized door introverted, intellectual, intuitive and calm.

Passive signs are those that have “negative polarity” and are Yin signs.

These signs are: Taurus, cancer, Virgo, Scorpio, Capricorn and Pisces.

The signs are either earth signs or water signs, and are feminine, passive, introverted, submissive, refreshed, reflective, and receptive.
